A glimpse into my growth journey

Shades of Gray

✲

Eventually the day will come when you have to make the decision, or the decision is made for you.

Sometimes it’s hard to know when you should salvage or fix something versus let it go. Comfort, familiarity, time invested, and money invested are often factors that will tip the scale either way. We begin to weigh the cost of starting over. What will I lose? What will I gain?

This type of decision can be crippling for many of us. Often lingering for days, weeks, months, or even years depending on the magnitude of the crisis in question.

Maybe it’s a relocation or new position at work. It could be deciding to buy a home or apply for a new job. Should I get a new car or repair the transmission? You mull it over. You talk yourself out of it. You talk yourself into it. You seek advice from friends, family, spiritual leaders, significant others and even coworkers.

Eventually the day will come when you have to make the decision, or the decision is made for you. The car breaks down, the pink slip is given, or the divorce papers get served.

I personally like to make my own decisions, but lately I’ve found myself stuck at a crossroad, not sure which way to turn. I’ve prayed and contemplated. I’ve over analyzed the pros and cons. I’ve internalized to the point that now the decision seems too overwhelming. Basically I have camped out at the crossroad because choosing the wrong path – in my mind – is too detrimental. But why do I feel that way?

Because even at this point in my life I am terrified of making a mistake, making the wrong choice. I have convinced myself that there is only one right choice.

Is that true though? Is life really so black and white? No, we all know there are many shades of gray.

I am trying to rewire my brain and habits, but it is very challenging. As a person who always wants to know where I stand, gray areas drive me crazy. I admit I may never truly be comfortable as I walk this new path, but I will go slowly….and reserve the right to turn around if it proves to in fact not be the best for me. Until then I will try my best to enjoy the scenery, learn new things, cultivate new connections, and add to my repertoire of life experiences.
